RE: Dimmer Control for Outdoor Lights

I think I have solved the problem. I had unpacked the instructions that came with my lights. They said if you use an extension cord be sure it is a three wire grounded. Maximum of 60 watt bulbs. When we got to our campsite and unpacked the lights I found the plug was only two wire. I am not an electrician but I couldn't see why I needed a dimmer with three wires(grounded). I made a trip to my local Lowe's and purchases a 500 watt lamp dimmer. It works great and I have plenty of capacity for my 360 watts worth of bulbs. I can go from minimal light to light up the night. It works great! Thanks again to everyone.

RE: Need Advice on Upgrading

I agree completely with the comments on your tow vehicle. First and foremost you have to enough of a rig to tow the vehicle you are considering. Next, I wouldn't worry too much about depreciation on your TT. No matter what you will probably take a major hit on trade. However, if that is what you decide to do just bite the bullet BUT look at the total package. If a dealer gives you a high price for your trade they will likely get more for the new rig. We also purchased a 2008 TT in January. We planned to pull it with our old conversion van which we used in the past. It needed some fairly expensive repairs before we felt safe pulling long distances. We ended up buying a used Ford F-350 power stroke diesel. Once we camped in the TT we realized we made a mistake and started shopping for a 5er. We bought a 2007 Keystone Laredo from Lazy Days in Seffner Florida in May. Did we take a hit? YES but with creative financing our monthly payment went up only $75 a month. I took a driver training course offered by the dealer. I had never pulled a 5er and that course gave me a lot of confidence before I started home. We now are very happy with our 5er and our camping experience and are becoming avid campers. Probably not full timers for a while but definitely half timers. I know this got lengthy but do what you need to do to follow your dream. Good Luck!

RE: Dimmer Control for Outdoor Lights

Thank you all for your advice & comments. While running other errands yesterday I visited an electrical supply house, a lighting fixture store and a lamp store. Other than a 2 wire lamp dimmer (300 watts max and not grounded), I could not find a dimmer to do the job. I am either going to make my own or buy the Intermatic timer and replace the timer guts with a dimmer. ($10 plus dimmer) This is a nice waterproof box with the wiring in place. I will just need to make certain that a 600 watt dimmer will fit in the box. My max wattage will be 360 but I was advised to not exceed 75% of a dimmer capacity. I'll post a picture if this works, Thanks again.

Dimmer Control for Outdoor Lights

I recently purchased a set of awning lights (6 globes) from CW. I wanted the ability to have enough illumination for reading under the awning but be able to crank down the brightness for outdoor meals etc. I thought I could visit my local Lowe's/Walmart etc. and purchase a plug in dimmer. I know I have seen these somewhere. No such luck! I have searched the Internet at length and cannot find a thing. Intermatic makes a timer but not a dimmer. The lights have a 3 prong grounded plug with a nice long cord and I would like to keep the grounded circuitry. Does anyone know of a dimmer product for this use?

RE: How much discount off the MSRP can we expect to get?

We just purchased a new 5er from a dealer here in Cincinnati yesterday. They used an MSRP that was about $10,000 below what two other dealers had quoted. Even so they gave us another 5$,000 off. First, there are good dealers and bad dealers. I wouldn't depend on a dealer for information on prices. Use the Internet. Shop the wholesale on-line dealers for best prices. They will generally give you their best price up front. Take that information with you when you shop in person. I shopped dealers on line from Florida to Texas and many places in between. You didn't say what brand or model you wanted to purchase. Good Luck! LakeBill

RE: RVdirect.com

To everyone who responded to my inquiry about RVdirect.com - Thank You so much. I did a search on the RVdirect topic and found a mountain of comments and information. It appears that most of the feedback was positive. The two biggest drawbacks seem to be possible problems if warranty repairs are needed locally and the length of time needed to receive delivery. While reviewing the information I saw a couple of postings from tazzy. After shopping RVdirect tazzy had contacted a dealer in Cincinnati and had received a price match on the RVdirect quote and I think purchased a Keystone model from this dealer. I got on the site for the dealer and received a quote by e-mail that was actually a few hundred dollars better than RVdirect. This dealer is almost in my back yard (abt 20 miles away) plus they have two of the model in stock for immediate delivery. We are headed out today to view them in person. Several years ago we joined the RV way of life when we purchased a travel trailer. We researched thoroughly before making the purchase. This time we got careless and purchased a travel trailer in haste. We knew after two trips that we had made a mistake. I am sure we will take a financial hit for this mistake but finding a dealer with a great price on the unit our careful research has helped us select will greatly reduce the financial pain. Thanks again to everyone.

RVdirect.com

We are in the process of trading in a travel trailer for a fifth wheel. I found RVdirect.com in an advertisement in an RV Buyers Guide. We have been quoted a price on a Keystone model that is thousands below anything we could find at a local dealer. Has anyone out there had any business dealings with this Internet site?
